Graduation Night

My 4 year stint with my deaf student came to and end tonight as he graduated and moves on to his future. We had many good times together and a few times that made me want to pull my hair out. But, in all, he was probably the best kid for me to work with. We had a lot in common, especially the love of profanity, and that is important when working one on one with someone for so long. Not the profanity!

Before I accepted him, my boss at the time told me he's the perfect match for me. You know, she was right. He came back home to be mainstreamed after getting kicked out of a deaf school several times. He was a "bad ass" in the past and needed a male influence to set him straight. I guess he had a few female interpreters in the past and they didn't work out. I didn't go in there to correct him, but I tried to be the positive influence that was needed. I guess it worked!

I hate to see him go cause I knew most days I was in for an easy day. He wasn't a demanding kid and wasn't into perfection which made my job easy. He never once criticized my signing style and offered his 2 cents worth if I asked for it. Half the time I was signing to myself while he was off in la la land.

He is supposed to get a job working for an auto body shop near Pittsburgh next week. I don't want to see him screw this up. He worked long and hard at Vo-Tech for 3 years and it would be shameful if he wastes his talent. He fixed and painted his car this past year at school.

My last words to him were, "I don't want to read your name in the newspaper for being in trouble!"
