If you've seen any interviews with Sidney Crosby lately, you may have been left wondering: Who's Bryce?
"It was the Make-A-Wish Foundation and we did a bowling event with a couple kids from the foundation," Crosby said.
It was an event that was supposed to partner Sid with Bryce Cunningham, a 10-year-old who developed cancer three years ago.
Bryce and his dad just happened to be watching a Penguins post-game show one night when they noticed Sidney's hat.
"It was … crusty and I said, 'We're going to bowl with him here in a few weeks – why don't we get a hat made up for him,'" Don Cunningham said.
But there was a problem. Sidney missed the event because he had strep throat. So instead of bowling with Sid, Bryce was paired with Marc-Andre Fleury.
Bryce and his father asked for the special hat to be delivered to Sidney for him to wear after games which opened up an entirely new dilemma.
"I'm not one for change usually – I don't usually change things up but I felt like it was a great thing and then I appreciated it and was more than willing to do it," Sidney explained. "I'm not one for change but it's worked out pretty good though."
"He said that since he's been wearing the hat he's been getting better," Bryce said.
"I think it's probably more cool for dad than it is for the son but at some point and time I'm sure he's going to feel the weight of it – the gravity of it – but he thinks it's cool," Cunningham said.
Bryce is now two years cancer-free. He still gets his quarterly checkups but so far they've been good and they pray every night they remain that way.
