The Penguins confirmed today that defenseman Sergei Gonchar will have arthroscopic surgery on his dislocated left shoulder Thursday and will be out four to six months.
Dr. Mark Rodosky of UPMC will perform the surgery, which will repair cartilage and ligament damage Gonchar suffered in a hit by Tampa Bay winger David Koci during the Penguins' pre-season opener Sept. 20.
"It is always difficult to lose a very talented player and leader for an extended period of time, but we all believe this is the best decision for Sergei," general manager Ray Shero said in a prepared statement. "We are confident that he will come back strong after this surgery. In the meantime, we'll look to our other defensemen to step up in his absence."
The Penguins, who will open the regular season with two games against Ottawa in Stockholm, Sweden, this weekend, also are missing defenseman Ryan Whitney, who is expected to be out until December while recovering from foot surgery.
